Click on each image for a closer look! . On Sunday, September 26th, 2010, we held an evening photo shoot of our engines and rolling stock. As the public museum hours came to an end, further equipment moves were scheduled and completed to position all our equipment for the first photographic opportunity. . In the middle image above, we see most, but not all, of the volunteers who turned out to take pictures and assist with the movement of the equipment in a safe manner. In the pictures below we see that CN GP7 #4803 and CN Northern #6213 were moved to parallel tracks just outside the Roundhouse joining CP #7020 to allow a portrait to be made of all three. #6213 was backed partway into the Roundhouse itself to align the engines appropriately. . Weekend Report: Busy days & Preparing for the "night shoot"
Click on each image for a closer look! . Despite the onset of cooler fall weather we had another great weekend with a fine turnout of visitors enjoying Roundhouse Park. Early on Sunday, our volunteers moved a number of our engines and rolling stock to new locations in the park in order to position them properly per the plan for the night time photo which we announced in a an earlier TRHA News posting. The attached images of visitors enjoying the train and turntable rides also show some of the new visual perspectives which resulted. . In a subsequent postings this week, we will cover the Sunday evening photo shoot. Click on each image for a closer look! . The Bytown Railway Society is Ottawa’s equivalent of the TRHA. Founded in 1969, their aim is to promote interest in railway history. Among the society’s long list of publications are their journal, “Branchline”, as well as the definitive guide to railways in Canada, the annual “Canadian Trackside Guide”. They also maintain and restore a varied collection of rolling stock.
The Bytown Railway Society stores their collection at the Science and Technology Museum site and much of it is visible from the parking lot. This past summer, the society operated a train for visitors on Wednesdays and Sundays. During a visit on 29 August, their train’s consist was a vintage CP coach, a CP caboose from 1913 and No. 3, a 1925 Lima 2-truck Shay locomotive built for use on logging railways. The train takes visitors on a 10-minute ride along a track within the museum site. . Pictured above is the train for visitors featuring the vintage coach, caboose and the Shay locomotive. The photographs below show some of the Society’s collection: Pictured are CP 402818, a 1907 spreader for snow clearing (it has been restored and is once again used in winter); their Central Vermont steam-crane and No. 10, a 50-ton diesel used to move equipment around the site. Trip Report: Canada Science and Technology Museum, Ottawa
Click on each image for a closer look! . The Science and Technology Museum is a must for any railway enthusiast visiting Ottawa. It has an excellent collection of steam locomotives from both CN and CP, as well as a selection of rolling stock. . Unfortunately, much of the museum’s collection is hidden from view in their storage warehouse, but five of their steam locomotives are on display. CN 6200, a sister of Toronto’s 6213, is displayed on the front lawn. CP 926, CP 2858, CP 3100 and CN 6400 are all on display in the museum’s steam locomotive room. You can visit 3100’s and 2858’s cabs and walk around the outside of all the engines. . Also on display in the locomotive room is CN 76109, a caboose from prior to 1895, complete with restored interior. Visitors can also see “Terra Nova”, a CN business car built for use in Newfoundland on the island’s narrow 42-inch gauge railway. . The photographs show three of the museum’s locomotives: CN 6200 on the lawn and CN 6400 and CP 3100 in the museum. The other two photographs show the interior of the CN caboose and the business car “Terra Nova”. . More information about the building of CP 3100 can be found by clicking here. Announcing an evening photo shoot to be held in Roundhouse Park!
Click on each image for a closer look! . Over the past few years, we have posted numerous railway oriented night photos. A number are presented here to illustrate how powerful they can be. In an earlier TRHA News posting, we documented a recent initiative by a number of our accomplished photographers in our TRHA community to test Roundhouse Park locations for night time photo opportunities. . The Toronto Railway Historical Assocation (TRHA) and this group of photographers are now planning to take a series of night photos for publicity purposes in Roundhouse Park starting at dusk on Sunday, September 26th, 2010, weather permitting. . While this will not be a formal public event, it is taking place in a public park and interested people are welcome to watch the action and take their own photographs. TRHA volunteers will be ensuring the safety of our crews and spectators. There will be a few areas, especially around the turntable pit, where the general public will not be permitted to go because of safety concerns. Planned scenes include a lineup of steam and diesel locomotives outside the roundhouse and diesel locomotives posed in railway village area. . If all goes well during this event, the TRHA may conduct further more formal night photo shoots for interested members of the public in the future with substantially greater notice. . Weekend Report: Part 2 of 2: Turntable becomes a rotating bandstand!
Click on each image for a closer look! . On Sunday, the Toronto Argonauts football team played the Wimmpeg Blue Bombers at the Rogers Centre with 19,662 fans in attendance. Toronto beat Winnipeg by a score of 17 to 13. . To celebrate the win, the Argonotes, the official Toronto Argonauts Band, visited Roundhouse Park and marched onto the turntable turning it into a unique rotating bandstand. They then proceeded to entertain everyone as the turntable was rotated. Click on the video below to listen to their performance. To learn more about the Argonotes Band, click here. . On Sunday we again moved rolling stock into the park area providing an interesting photography platform from the cupola of the caboose as shown in one of the images above of the miniature train in action. Moving the Pyke crane into the park also provided an opportunity for a new view of the crane against the city as backdrop as also shown above. . Weekend Report - Part 1 of 2: Displaying a consist in the park!
Click on each image for a closer look! . On Saturday, we decided to pull out the caboose and put it on display in the park with the Whitcomb diesel pulling the train and the Fowler boxcar completing the consist. In the picture at the lower left, we find a pair of young ladies thoroughly enjoying learning how to drive a full size diesel engine. At the lower right, we find a most common sight of visitors taking pictures of their friends and families. Here the young fellow borrowed my engineer's cap to provide just the right atmosphere. .
