Cape Race: Behind the drumhead - lots of rust!

As we race to complete the exterior restoration of the Cape Race, work proceeded s expected to finish all of the windows.

Our restoration team also worked hard to remove rust from the outside of the car and then gave the cleaned areas a coat of metal primer- At first look the side panel looked in good condition but we discovered that there rust in nearly all the seams.

We removed the covers from the drum head mounting bolts and the associated electrical outlet on the east side of the car. Once that was done, we exposed the worst rust yet experienced. In one spot, a 1/8" thick plate has expanded to nearly 1/2” of laminated rust.  The internal electrical box was only half there.

The pictures below  provide a sense of the challenges we face in our restoration efforts.
